New America School: Update

There are four New America high school campuses in Colorado—Lowry, Northglenn, Lakewood, and Eagle—that serve English Language Learners, helping them to learn English and earn a high school diploma.

The 2007-2008 school year was busy and productive for The New America School’s campuses. A record number of students—110—received diplomas in a June ceremony. Six of the graduates were awarded post-secondary education scholarships. Overall, New America School (NAS) has increased its graduation rate by nearly 9 percent in two years.

NAS will continue its upward progression of academic progress, student achievement and graduation rates in 2008-2009. New America Schools have focused intensely on student achievement and retention. Because the schools serve at-risk youth with many difficulties, they must continually strive to keep them in class where their language skills can progress.

This year, New America Schools will begin implementing the Discovery Program, an intensive method that integrates life skills with curriculum and team-building to assure students are prepared and receive the most from their classroom work. Discovery sets a high standard for student behavior that fosters cooperation and learning. The campuses that will be implementing Discovery, Lowry and Northglenn, are fully committed to the program and believe it will foster a critical combination of personal responsibility and achievement.
